NORTHERN LIGHTS

February & March are the best months to take in the bright spectacle of the Northern Lights—AKA the aurora borealis—in Northern Scandinavia.

Under clear skies, this is what you can look forward to:

  • 9 of 10 nights in the region Tromsø, northern Norway
  • 8 of 10 nights near Kiruna in northern Sweden
  • 7 of 10 nights in the Finnish Lapland

2/18
DAYLIGHT

Even in winter, the sun shines in the Arctic!

At the time the rally takes place (end of February/beginning of March), the days are already more than 10 hours long.

The sun rises at around 7 a.m. and sets around 5 p.m.

And at night under the moonlight, the snow shines brilliantly, too!

THE ROUTE

Starting Line and Finish Line in Hamburg

7,500 km in 16 days through

  • Scandinavia:
    Denmark, Sweden, Norway & Finland
  • Arctic Circle, Lapland & North Cape
  • Through Finland to Helsinki
  • Baltic States:
    Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania
  • Poland & Germany

4/18
LODGINGS

From setting up a makeshift camp right on a glacier, to sharing a log cabin with the local beavers, to booking a luxury hotel complete with a bottle of bubbly—anything goes! Choose your own lodgings depending on your budget and your notion of “adventure.”

Even playing it by ear and deciding as you go has worked out for teams in the past and generally isn’t a problem in the time period the rally takes place.

5/18
THE ROADWAY

The conditions of the roads during the rally couldn’t be any more unpredictable:

from dry asphalt lanes at 10 degrees C,
to snow-covered dirt roads
at minus 20 degrees C,
through to icy pothole parkour tours
at 0 degrees C.

Anything’s possible and there’s a little something for everyone!

6/18
THE RIGHT TIRES

Just as with any adventure rally—but especially in winter—choosing the right tires is a science unto itself.

Really good winter tires are an absolute must!

Whether you’re allowed to use spiked/studded tires depends on each country’s road regulations. If you want to cruise with spikes, you should wait until Scandinavia to put them on, as they are generally forbidden in Germany.
